JULIA’S INSPIRATION

FALL 2015
Into Each Life
Some Fall Must Reign
Hey there, y’all! It’s fall! You can tell from my southern greeting, I have been spending a lot of time in Dallas lately, with my new licensing partners, Global Views. Now as the days grow shorter, I am home in Chicago, catching my breath after a world wind, five-city summer tour promoting my new home accessories line. It has been an exhilarating launch, both hectic and humbling.

As I enjoy the cooler fall weather and get back into my pseudo routine, I look to see what inspires me this fall.

Now that I have my own home furnishings products in the marketplace, I admit I see products and brands from a different point of view. I scrutinize, contrast and compare what is in today’s marketplace, not as an interior designer, but as a product designer.

What I am finding most inspirational this fall are the “go the distance” products and “fantastic forever” brands that continue to please and perform, get placed and purchased year after year. I have become obsessed with finding this fall’s “jewels in the crown products” that continue to inspire generation after generation.

First on my list of “most inspiring this fall,” is Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Now the longest reigning monarch of Great Britain, with almost 64 years of rare, regal and resounding success, she is remarkable and rousing.

The next treasures to grab my attention are my favorite fashion designers. Season after season, fashion continually captures my attention, imagination and pocketbook. I find so much excitement in the textures, techniques and passion that pours out of the fashion industry.

Some things in life are just right, year after year, with no updating, re-adjusting or re-thinking. They really are the jewels in the crown of life.

My list of icons and timeless treasures mark the changing of the seasons, but also inspire me to be my best, to follow my heart and live my passions — completely. Even royally!

The next place where the concept of longevity and staying power really caught me by surprise was my own studio.Like many designers, I specify furniture and accessories that were designed a hundred years ago and are as appropriate today as when they first came off the drawing board! As a new product designer, that concept certainly motivates.

And with full disclosure, the last category of inspiration to welcome my road-weary soul has been simple, unchanging, gooey, sentimental traditions. Like many designers, I specify furniture and accessories that were designed a hundred years ago and are as appropriate today as when they first came off the drawing board! As a new product designer, that concept certainly motivates.

Whether I am designing a space for a client, creating new home furnishing products for the marketplace, or enjoying an annual caramel-covered treat in my still-cool Converse sneakers, I plan to keep doing what I do, steady on. Right as rain, or better yet, reign?

May the reoccurrence and longevity of your fall favorites, whether they be tall boots, tweed suits or coveted, classic blankets, inspire your success, happiness, health and long prosperous career.

And ya’ll, in the spirit of Her Majesty, The Queen, don’t forget to wear your invisible crown everyday.
